Overview

The Caines Head Kayak & Hike Private Tour is Sunny Cove’s most physically demanding day tour. This high-activity adventure combines up to 10 miles of sea kayaking with up to 5 miles of hiking and approximately 650 feet of elevation gain.

After checking in at the Sunny Cove Adventure Center, your group will travel by van through Seward and along the shoreline of Resurrection Bay to the launch site. Your guides will provide kayaking equipment, outfitting, instruction, and a safety briefing before heading onto the water.

Paddle along the coast of Caines Head State Recreation Area while watching for sea otters, harbor seals, sea lions, bald eagles, seabirds, and seasonal salmon. After reaching shore, explore forested trails where you may encounter WWII artifacts and visit a waterfall if time and the group’s pace allow.

Previous kayaking or hiking experience is not required, but guests must be physically capable and prepared for a high-activity day. The route, distance, and elevation gain vary based on the group’s pace.

Wildlife sightings are possible but never guaranteed. Seasonal salmon may be present from late July through September.

Itinerary

8:20 AM: Check in at the Adventure Center, 1302 A 4th Avenue
8:30 AM: Depart by van for the launch site
Approximately 8:50 AM: Arrive at the launch site, get outfitted, and complete paddling instruction and a safety briefing
9:30 to 9:40 AM: Begin kayaking along Caines Head State Recreation Area
Approximately 12:30 PM: Wrap, fruit snack, chips, and beverage
Afternoon: Hiking and kayaking continue based on the group’s pace; WWII artifacts and a waterfall may be included if time and pace allow
Approximately 4:45 PM: Complete the water and trail activities
5:00 to 5:15 PM: Return to the Adventure Center
